How Do I Verify School Boundaries and Enrollment in Scottsdale?

School boundary verification means matching a specific property address to the specific district and campus that will serve a child at each grade level, then confirming that assignment in writing with the governing body, usually Scottsdale Unified School District at 7575 E Main St or Cave Creek Unified at 33016 North 60th Street.

Attendance zone boundaries are supplied by Pitney Bowes and are subject to change. And assignment is not the same as guaranteed placement at any school you choose: three SUSD schools have no geographic boundaries at all, and every family must apply to them through Open Enrollment.

School boundary verification means matching a specific property address to the specific district and the specific campus that will serve a child at each grade level, then confirming that assignment with the governing body that draws the lines. In Scottsdale that is usually Scottsdale Unified School District, whose boundaries include most, but not all, of the city of Scottsdale, almost all of the town of Paradise Valley, and a section of the city of Phoenix. Cave Creek Unified School District, headquartered at 33016 North 60th Street, Scottsdale 85266, serves Cave Creek and Carefree as well as the northern portion of Scottsdale and a sliver of eastern Phoenix. A Scottsdale mailing address does not tell you which of those districts you are in.

Listing-site boundary maps are third-party data that is subject to change

School attendance zone boundaries are supplied by Pitney Bowes and are subject to change. Check with the applicable school district before making a decision based on those boundaries, and school ratings come from GreatSchools.org rather than being generated by the listing platform.

The mapping behavior has a second quirk worth knowing. When you search by a school that uses open enrollment, or a charter or private school with no assigned boundary, the results display homes within a 5-mile radius surrounding the school rather than an attendance zone. A house showing up in that result set has no assignment relationship to the school at all. Zillow launched search by school on October 11, 2023, and once a school or district is selected, the app displays the attendance zone boundaries on the map.

Treat the map pin as the beginning of the question. In a Scottsdale market where the median sale price was $906,900 for the three months ending August 2026, a wrong assumption about the assigned campus is an expensive one to discover after closing.

The district locators and the district office are the authoritative check

The district instructs you to provide your address in those locators to see the assigned school for your neighborhood.

Run the address through all three locators, not just the one for your child's current grade. The matriculation list is the piece most buyers skip, and it is the one that tells you where a fifth grader lands in three years.

Then confirm in writing with the district. The Scottsdale Unified District office is at 7575 E Main St, Scottsdale AZ 85251, phone (480) 484-6100. SUSD operates 14 elementary schools, 2 K-8 schools, 6 middle schools and 5 high schools, serving 20,000 students across 27 physical campuses and one online high school. Under Arizona law a "resident pupil" is a pupil whose residence is within the attendance area of a school, and a "resident school" is the school within the designated attendance area in which a pupil resides. A school district shall enroll at any time any resident pupil who applies for enrollment.

If you are buying in the northern part of the city, run the address against Cave Creek Unified as well before you assume SUSD.

Enrollment in a school you are not zoned for runs through open enrollment, and capacity governs

Arizona school district governing boards are required to establish policies and implement an open enrollment policy without charging tuition, and those policies must include admission criteria, application procedures and transportation provisions. A copy of the district's open enrollment policies must be available to the public on request. Arizona state law allows students to apply for admission to any public school through open enrollment based on available classroom space under A.R.S. § 15-816.01, and acceptance is based on the school's grade-level and program capacity and on meeting all admission requirements.

That is the part buyers misread. Buying inside a boundary secures enrollment at the resident school. It does not secure a seat at a different campus you liked better.

SUSD's Open Enrollment applies to two groups: SUSD students whose parents want them to attend an SUSD school other than the one to which they are geographically assigned, and students who reside outside SUSD boundaries. Three SUSD schools have no geographic boundaries for enrollment, and all applicants must apply to those through open enrollment. If you reside within SUSD boundaries and your child attends the assigned neighborhood school, you do not need to re-enroll year to year. Open Enrollment for the 2026-27 school year is open and Regular Enrollment for the 2026-27 school year is open.

Arizona law also permits preferences. A school district may give enrollment preference based on certain state placements, and may give enrollment preference to and reserve capacity based on employment at a school in the district. The Arizona State Board of Education adopts a model format districts may use for describing open enrollment options and enrollment capacity at each school, and the Arizona Department of Education provides an annual report on the open enrollment participation rate by school district, school and county.

Boundaries in Scottsdale are being redrawn right now

A boundary is a board decision, and boards change them.

The boundary work followed. Pursuant to A.R.S. 38-431.02, the Governing Board gave notice of a public hearing open to the public on February 2, 2026 at Coronado High School, 7501 E. Virginia Ave., Scottsdale, AZ 85257. At its February 10, 2026 meeting the board did not take action on the proposed reboundary areas for the Pima neighborhood. On February 25, 2026, the Governing Board voted to adopt Option 3a for the current Pima boundaries, under which portions of Pima are now divided between Yavapai and other schools. Pima School now serves as the SUSD Level D special education program, and Pima Annex now serves as the Special Education Hub for SUSD, with pre-school screenings, department staff, and a resource facility for assistive technology and occupational and physical therapy equipment.

More is in front of the board. SUSD held a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, September 22 in the Desert Mountain High School auditorium, and the superintendent described it as another opportunity for community input regarding potential school closures and resulting attendance boundary changes. Three proposals were on the table that would shutter campuses, consolidate programs and shift students. Option A would move Cheyenne Traditional School, a K-8, to the Copper Ridge campus. Option C would close Copper Ridge K-8 and Laguna Prep, redistribute boundaries, and includes a possible Desert Canyon K-8 merger, with a stated student impact range of 773 to 872. The governing board is scheduled to take a final vote on the reorganization next month, and any approved changes would take effect for the 2027-2028 school year.

Two practical consequences for a buyer under contract in Scottsdale right now. Check the district's School Repurposing and Enrollment Review page and the Governing Board agenda for the address you are buying before you remove your inspection contingency. And ask the district directly whether the campus your locator returned is named in any pending proposal.

Transportation, specialty programs and after-school questions to put to the district in writing

Transportation is the question most buyers forget, and in Arizona it is separable from assignment. District transportation services are not available to open enrollment students, and students attending under open enrollment must provide their own transportation, including students enrolled in a school that is not their school of residence. Under Arizona's open enrollment statute, the governing board of the district educating the pupil shall provide transportation limited to not more than thirty miles each way to and from the school of attendance, or to and from a pickup point on a regular transportation route.

On programs, SUSD offers gifted learning, special education, career and technical education, and a variety of athletics, arts and enrichment programs and clubs. The Math and Science Academy is a district-wide program housed at Saguaro High School that prepares students for success in the STEM field after high school. World language offerings include Spanish Immersion beginning in Pre-K and Mandarin Immersion beginning in Kindergarten. SUSD invites you to tour district schools and to ask about their academic and extracurricular programs.

Questions worth asking the district office before you close:

• Which elementary, middle and high school campuses does this exact address feed into, and what does the matriculation list show for each grade transition?
• Is this campus named in any pending closure, consolidation or reboundary proposal in front of the Governing Board?
• Is there grade-level and program capacity at this campus, and what are the admission criteria and application procedures under the district's posted open enrollment policy?
• If we enroll through open enrollment rather than at the resident school, who provides transportation?
• Is the district-wide Math and Science Academy at Saguaro High School, Spanish Immersion or Mandarin Immersion available to a student assigned to this campus, and does it require an open enrollment application?

The founder's market research for Scottsdale reports school-related district information qualitatively. It does not publish after-school program availability or bell schedules campus by campus, so put those to the school office directly.

What this means for a buyer in a Scottsdale market at these prices

Days on market is the median time from listing to going under contract, and sale-to-list is the share of asking price a home sells for. At 77 days on market, you generally have time to run the address through the district locators and get a written answer from the district office before you write an offer.

Verify school assignment in three steps and in this order. Run the address through the SUSD Elementary/K-8, Middle/K-8 and High School Locators and read the matriculation list. Confirm the result in writing with the district office at 7575 E Main St, Scottsdale AZ 85251, (480) 484-6100, and ask whether the campus appears in any pending closure or reboundary proposal, since the Governing Board is scheduled to take a final vote on a reorganization next month with changes effective for the 2027-2028 school year.
